The Real Steel Bushcraft Plus Convex 3720 is a great bushcraft knife, with a convex grind. This is a popular grind you don’t come across that often because it is hard to produce consistently. Real Steel, however, demonstrates that they are perfectly capable of doing so, and that for such a competitive price! The Real Steel Bushcraft Plus Convex therefore also challenges popular bushcraft knives in a much higher price range.
## What is convex grind?
You might have heard of the term convex grind before, but what is a convex edge? It comes down to this. The grind isn’t hollow or flat, but convex. In one flowing line the knife becomes thinner as it moves from the spine towards the edge. As such the edge doesn’t have a ‘shoulder’ that could get in the way as you use the knife. You will therefore experience a lot less resistance when you use a convex edge as when you use a knife with a conventional V-edge. In addition, a convex edge is a little stronger, because directly behind the apex (the end of the edge) the knife has a little more material. As such, in theory, a convex edge won’t chip as easily. A disadvantage is that a convex edge is a lot more difficult to produce. Sharpening a convex edge also requires a different sharpening technique. We recommend to strop this knife on a leather strop with a compound or diamond paste.
The blade is made from Sandvik 14C28N steel. This is stainless type of steel from Sweden. It is relatively tough and easy to sharpen and strop. And yet it retains its sharpness well. Real Steel’s heat treatment is therefore great.
The handle of the Real Steel Bushcraft Plus Convex is made from G10. Simply a decent and reliable option. It is strong, relatively light-weight and doesn’t need any maintenance. In terms of ergonomics Real Steel demonstrates how you use a bushcraft knife. From the top of the handle you see the profile of the famous ‘cokebottle shape’. This means that the scales are thin in the front, become thicker, a little thinner and thicker once again at the end of the handle. Just like the famous glass coke bottles.
The handle is high enough to always tell you where the edge is located. This ‘indexing’ is very important. At the same time all corners and edges are rounded enough to make sure the handle will even feel comfortable during long-term use. Regardless of how you hold the knife.
The quality of this knife doesn’t end with the knife itself. The sheath is also great. It is a kydex sheath that is placed in a nylon sheath. As such it fits perfectly. You can remove the kydex insert by loosening the piece of string at the bottom. As such you can also change it for left-handed use. You can even decide to only use the kydex sheath, with a belt clip or carrier option to your liking. The front of the nylon sheath has been enhanced with a little compartment with enough room for a firesteel, sharpening stone, survival tin, compass, tinder or other survival gear.

Optimal size, cool feature of the space inside the handle, the handle itself is comfy and its size is just ok, also I really appreciate the lanyard hole place – it's so great and authentic. What is the most cool is the grind, this is my first convex blade and it's awesome! If it's sharp it cuts everything even better than the flats, in my opinion. With this knife I fell in love with convex grind. But frankly there's a couple of drawbacks, I have a few other knives in the same steel and they absolutely stainless (ain't talking about lemon juice, salt water etc)! This one isn't, it can go stains if wet for a long time, with that said this is not some severe rust, those stains can be removed while the next sharpening easily. If it would have been made of Magnacut it probably be the perfect knife for me personally.,Matteo, Trescore BalnearioThursday, 2 March 2023,In generalValue for moneyExpectationsThis review has been written in Italian.
