The Gerber Principle Coyote Bushcraft 30-001657 is a cool bushcraft knife. When developing the Principle Gerber truly did its homework. The brand carefully looked at the needs of both amateur and expert bushcraft enthusiasts, making the Principle the perfect knife for every level.
The basis of a bushcraft knife is the handle. That is why Gerber enhanced the Principe with a ‘Triple Grip Ergonomics’ system. This means that the Principle was optimized for the three basic bushcraft grips: the ‘baseball grip’, also called the hammer grip. The precision grip and the ‘chest lever’.
## How to hold the Gerber Principle
For the baseball grip you tightly close your hand around the handle like you are holding a hammer. With it you do most of the work. The handle of the Principle is constructed as such that it fills your hand enough for a comfortable grip. The next grip is the precision grip. You place your thumb on the front hollow pin in the handle and you place your index finger on the spine of the blade. Because of the hollow pin you will instinctively know where your thumb belongs, even with your eyes closed. The last grip is the ‘chest lever’ grip. With this grip you hold the knife in a reversed hammer grip. So with the pommel against your chest and the edge pointed at your elbow. With the Principle you also place your thumb on the hollow pin with this reversed grip. You notice that the ergonomics were carefully thought through. You will find more information about bushcraft cutting techniques in our topic about [Basic Knife Safety](/en/ct/how-do-you-safely-use-an-outdoor-knife.htm).
## Gerber Principle blade
With only a handle you won’t get very far. The blade is also well thought out. The spine of the blade was sanded at a 90-degree angle to make sure it is sharp enough to scrape a firesteel to build a fire, or to remove tree bark for tinder. The edge is enhanced with a sharp scandi grind. It doesn’t contain a ‘micro bevel’. The end of the edge, however, was polished/stropped for additional sharpness. The scandi edge can also easily be sharpened in the field, even with limited means. The blade is made from 420HC steel. This is a tough type of stainless steel that is easy to sharpen.
## Sheath of the Gerber Principle
When it comes to carrying a knife there are many different preferences. Vertically on your belt? Horizontally on your belt? A MOLLE system perhaps? The Gerber Principle can do it all. With a basic sheath that securely stores the blade and different included carrier options.
All in all the Gerber Principle is a versatile bushcraft knife that answers to the needs of many different users. Made in the United States, for an amazing price.
